Icebreaker: What do you sense that God is doing in this season of your life?
Introduction: God created us for His purpose, and He has plans for our lives. God’s will is within reach for everyone who draws close and develops a relationship with God.
Recap: How to know God’s Will
1. Meditate on God’s Word
“Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path.” Psalm 119:105 (NLT)
2. Guidance of the Holy Spirit (Matthew 4:1-17, Acts 8:29-35 and Romans 8:14, John 15:26, John 16:5-15 and John 20:19-23)
Today’s Discussion Read 2 Chronicles 20 and discuss the following:
- If you were in King Jehoshaphat’s position, what would be your natural response?
- What are some lessons from this passage on how God leads us?
- How does King Jehoshaphat compare with the average person today with respect to response to threats?
Additional ways to know God’s will include:
3. Seek God's Will by Praying and Fasting
“Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all He has done” - Philippians 4:6, NLT
“We ask God to give you complete knowledge of His will and to give you spiritual wisdom and understanding. Then the way you live will always honor and please the Lord, and your lives will produce every kind of good fruit. All the while, you will grow as you learn to know God better and better” - Colossians 1:9-10, NLT
4. Listen to God’s representative – including priests, prophets.
20 And they rose early in the morning and went out into the wilderness of Tekoa. And when they went out, Jehoshaphat stood and said, “Hear me, Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem! Believe in the Lord your God, and you will be established; believe his prophets, and you will succeed.” - 2 Chronicles 20:20
19 Present him to Eleazar the priest before the whole community, and publicly commission him to lead the people. 20 Transfer some of your authority to him so the whole community of Israel will obey him. 21 When direction from the Lord is needed, Joshua will stand before Eleazar the priest, who will use the Urim—one of the sacred lots cast before the Lord—to determine his will. This is how Joshua and the rest of the community of Israel will determine everything they should do.” 22 So Moses did as the Lord commanded. He presented Joshua to Eleazar the priest and the whole community. 23 Moses laid his hands on him and commissioned him to lead the people, just as the Lord had commanded through Moses. - Numbers 27:15-23
5. Seek Wise Counsel from Godly People
21 And when he had taken counsel with the people, he appointed those who were to sing to the Lord and praise him in holy attire, as they went before the army, and say, “Give thanks to the Lord, for his steadfast love endures forever.” - 2 Chronicles 20:21
6. Walk by Faith (act)
22 And when they began to sing and praise, the Lord set an ambush against the men of Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir, who had come against Judah, so that they were routed. 23 For the men of Ammon and Moab rose against the inhabitants of Mount Seir, devoting them to destruction, and when they had made an end of the inhabitants of Seir, they all helped to destroy one another. - 2 Chronicles 20:22
7. Pay Attention to Doors God Opens and Closes
7 “And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write: ‘The words of the holy one, the true one, who has the key of David, who opens and no one will shut, who shuts and no one opens. 8 “‘I know your works. Behold, I have set before you an open door, which no one is able to shut. I know that you have but little power, and yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name. - Revelation 3:7-8
9 for a wide door for effective work has opened to me, and there are many adversaries. - 1 Corinthians 16:9
9 And a vision appeared to Paul in the night: a man of Macedonia was standing there, urging him and saying, “Come over to Macedonia and help us.” - Acts 16:9
- Study God's word to know God’s revealed will:
“Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.” - 2 Timothy 2:15
- Be led by the Spirit of God - Romans 8:13-17
- Serve God’s Purpose: - Joshua 24:15b
