Introduction:

We are in the world but not of the world. As America goes, so does the world. America is in trouble and so is the world. As we go about our lives and personal businesses, it is often hard to see what is going on all around us. As we focus on our little lights, it is quite easy to forget that there is darkness all around us. The church seems to havetaken a long nap. We are supposed to be God’s buffer against evil in the world. We were created to subdue the earth and to exercise dominion. When we hibernate, sleep and slumber, we give room for evil to pervade the earth. It is time we arise and shine.

Did you know? (Statistics):

✓ Poverty – The US has the 4th largest poverty rate at 11.8% of our population versus 9.2% in extreme poverty in the world.
✓ Divorce rate in the US is 50% versus 41% globally
✓ Illiteracy – The US leads when it comes to illiteracy at 21% of our population compared to 14% globally
✓ Mental health issues – 21% of US versus 11% in the world

✓ Substance abuse - In 2020, there is a dangerous wave of drug abuse sweeping the nation. 47% of all young people use illegal drugs at least once by the time they leave high school, according to a recent study.
✓ Others - Disunity, homelessness, injustice, prison system etc. The problem in our world is dark, deep, and widespread.

There is great manifestation of evil in our world.

The Christian’s Dilemma

What does the bible (God’s word) have to say about how we are to respond to the manifestation of evil in our world?

There is a dilemma today. Christians are caught up in the world; pulled between the flesh and the Spirit; Between the things of God and of the world. Every generation of Christians have their unique challenges. Comfort and prosperity can be stumbling blocks for the 21st century Christian – making it hard to see and respond to the present darkness.

God’s response to evil is always people – Adam & Eve, Noah, Judges, Prophets etc… His only son Jesus.

Discussion Questions:

1. Read John 3:16-17, John 10:10-22, Acts 10:38. How does God want us to respond to darkness in our world today?
2. In Ephesians 6, we see that there is a cosmic spiritual warfare. How are we to engage as followers of Jesus?

 3. How are we doing in this spiritual warfare? How can we better engage and overcome darkness?

Personal Application:
