Topic: The Family Unit                                Series: Community

The God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in temples made by man, 25 nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all mankind life and breath and everything. 26 And he made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place, 27 that they should seek God, and perhaps feel their way toward him and find him. Yet he is actually not far from each one of us, 28 for “‘In him we live and move and have our being’; as even some of your own poets have said,” ‘For we are indeed his offspring.’ (Acts 17:24-28)

18 Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.” (Genesis 2:18)

So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh.22 And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man. 23 Then the man said, “This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.”  24 Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. 25 And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed. (Genesis 2:21-25)

Important life cues from the First Family Unit:

  1. Let God be in control of your marriage and family
  1. Connect with God, and only connect with someone connected with God
  1. God blesses those connected with and by Him

27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him;
male and female he created them.
28 And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”  (Genesis 1:27-28)

  1. Stay connected with God and your spouse

Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed. (Genesis 2:24-25)

  1. Protect the unity of your biological family

THREE QUESTIONS TO PONDER & COMMITMENTS TO MAKE:

Q1. What did God ask Abram to do?

Now the Lord said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you… So Abram went, as the Lord had told him, and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran.  (Genesis 12:2,4)

COMMITMENT #1: Turn over control of your life and destiny to God

Q2. How was Abram going to demonstrate His commitment to the one true God?

COMMITMENT #2: Get rid of every idol, be intentional with communing with God

Q3. What did God choose Abram to accomplish?

17 The Lord said, “Shall I hide from Abraham what I am about to do, 18 seeing that Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him? 19 For I have chosen him, that he may command his children and his household after him to keep the way of the Lord by doing righteousness and justice, so that the Lord may bring to Abraham what he has promised him.” (Genesis 18:17-19)

COMMITMENT #3: Command your children and household to keep the way of the Lord.

Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me. (Revelation 3:20)
