Topic: Trusted Money Managers              Series: Money Matters

24 “No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money. (Matthew 6:24)

Lessons from the Talents:

  1. Money and possessions are entrusted by God to me on purpose

“For it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted to them his property (Matthew 25:14)

This is how one should regard us, as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God. Moreover, it is required of stewards that they be found faithful. (1 Corinthians 4:1-2)

  1. I am entrusted with a measure of resources

15 To one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one, to each according to his ability. Then he went away. (Matthew 25:15)

  1. I am only responsible for what I’m entrusted with

16 He who had received the five talents went at once and traded with them, and he made five talents more. 17 So also he who had the two talents made two talents more. 18 But he who had received the one talent went and dug in the ground and hid his master’s money.19 Now after a long time the master of those servants came and settled accounts with them. 20 And he who had received the five talents came forward, bringing five talents more, saying, ‘Master, you delivered to me five talents; here, I have made five talents more.’ 21 His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.’22 And he also who had the two talents came forward, saying, ‘Master, you delivered to me two talents; here, I have made two talents more.’23 His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.’ (Matthew 25:16-30)

  1. There is a master behind my money decisions

24 He also who had received the one talent came forward, saying, ‘Master, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you did not sow, and gathering where you scattered no seed, 25 so I was afraid, and I went and hid your talent in the ground. Here, you have what is yours.’26 But his master answered him, ‘You wicked and slothful servant! You knew that I reap where I have not sown and gather where I scattered no seed? 27 Then you ought to have invested my money with the bankers, and at my coming I should have received what was my own with interest. 28 So take the talent from him and give it to him who has the ten talents. 29 For to everyone who has will more be given, and he will have an abundance. But from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away. 30 And cast the worthless servant into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’ (Matthew 25:24-30)

24 “No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money. (Matthew 6:24)

How to determine who’s master (in-charge):

  1. Examine my ownership attitude toward talents (money, possessions stuff)
  2. Question my motivations as I interact with talents
  3. Apply the purpose test – Am I aware of, and driven by, God’s purposes

And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work. As it is written, “He has distributed freely, he has given to the poor; his righteousness endures forever.” 10 He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness. 11 You will be enriched in every way to be generous in every way, which through us will produce thanksgiving to God. (2 Corinthians 9:8-11)

  • God gives liberally, and wants us to have more to abound in every good work
  • God gives seed for the purpose of sowing – don’t eat your seeds
  • God gives bread for food (distinguish the seed from the bread)
  • God multiples seed, we consume and defecate bread
  • The seeds we sow today, determines tomorrow’s harvest

Invitation to Pray:

  1. Pray for forgiveness – if we’ve behaved like the wicked servant
  2. Pray for help with being faith stewards
  3. Ask for seed to sow…
  4. Pray for God’s increase, blessing on your seed…
